The method iwi® was developed by Dr. Bauer in 2007 to approximate an observed flight path based on eyewitness observations.
Specificly for small aircraft / helicopter investigation, the situation can be, that no flight data is available, because the aircraft had no Flight Data Recorder installed. Mostly radar data was not available due to the low altitude in which the aircraft was flying.
For accident investigation often the flight path can provide additional information and with the method it can be reconstructed based on witness or video information.
The witness reports are taken with the iwi iPad application at the accident site. The information is then transferred into a 3D environment by an application (Immersive Witness Analyzer) to calculate and reconstruct the flight path based on lines of sight including errors and witness accuracy based on former investigations.
This allows first of all a quick visualization of the situation in 3D, showing possible dependencies of different witness statetements and finally all information is exported to GoogleEarth.
Finally the results can be also visualized in Virtual-Reality environment to analyze accident situation for human factor analysis and lessons learned communication.
